tidal bore

Upstream ocean wave

A tidal bore is a wave that travels up a river or narrow bay when an incoming tide meets the outgoing current.

The collision of forces creates a visible wall of water that moves upstream, sometimes powerfully enough to surf on.

Famous examples occur on the Amazon, the Severn in England, and China's Qiantang River.
