coastal flooding

Seaside water overflow

Coastal flooding is the inundation of land along shorelines, caused by storm surges, high tides, rising sea levels, or combinations of these forces.

Unlike river flooding, it involves saltwater pushing inland from oceans or seas: Coastal flooding damaged beachfront properties during the hurricane.

The term appears frequently in climate discussions, as rising seas increase flood risk for coastal communities.
