tidal force
Differential gravitational pull
Tidal force is the gravitational pull that one body exerts differently across another body, stretching it.
The moon's gravity pulls harder on the near side of Earth than the far side, creating ocean bulges on both sides—hence tides.
Tidal forces can tear apart moons or asteroids that venture too close to planets: The comet was ripped apart by Jupiter's tidal forces.
