sin offering
Guilt-cleansing ritual
A sin offering is a sacrifice made to atone for wrongdoing, especially in ancient Jewish religious practice.
An animal—typically a lamb, goat, or bull—was ritually slaughtered to purify the offender and restore their relationship with God.
The term appears throughout the Hebrew Bible and Christian discussions of Old Testament law.
Figuratively, someone made to bear blame for others' transgressions becomes a sin offering: Management used the junior employee as a sin offering to appease angry shareholders.
