burnt offering
Ritual fire sacrifice
A burnt offering is a religious sacrifice in which an animal is completely consumed by fire on an altar, offered to God or gods.
The term appears throughout the Hebrew Bible and other ancient religious texts.
In modern usage, burnt offering often appears humorously to describe badly charred food: Dinner's ready—hope you like burnt offerings.
