votive offering
Temple thank-you gift
A votive offering is an object given to a deity or sacred place in fulfillment of a vow, in hope of divine favor, or as thanksgiving.
Ancient temples accumulated bronze figurines, weapons, and pottery left by supplicants.
Modern examples include candles lit in churches or objects left at shrines: Pilgrims left votive offerings at the saint's tomb.
