mercy seat

Covenant chest cover

The mercy seat is the gold lid of the Ark of the Covenant in Hebrew scripture, where God was believed to appear and where the high priest sprinkled sacrificial blood on the Day of Atonement.

In Christian theology, the term extends to Christ as the place of atonement.

The phrase also appears for the electric chair or execution chamber, and as a metaphor for any place of judgment, forgiveness, or divine encounter: He came to the mercy seat seeking pardon.
