side-wheeler

Laterally propelled vessel

A side-wheeler is a steamboat propelled by paddle wheels mounted on its sides rather than at the stern.

These vessels dominated American river travel in the 19th century: The side-wheeler churned up the Mississippi.

The term distinguishes them from stern-wheelers, which have a single paddle wheel at the rear.
