sidewheel

Lateral paddle mechanism

A sidewheel is a paddle wheel mounted on the side of a boat, as opposed to a single wheel at the stern.

Sidewheel steamers dominated American rivers in the 19th century, their twin wheels churning the water on either flank.

As an adjective, sidewheel describes such vessels: a sidewheel riverboat, sidewheel ferries.
