sponson
Boat's side bulge
A sponson is a projection from the side of a vessel or vehicle, typically for stability or to mount equipment.
On ships, sponsons extend from the hull to support gun platforms or provide additional buoyancy.
On amphibious vehicles and seaplanes, they prevent capsizing.
Helicopters may have sponsons housing landing gear or fuel tanks.
