stoker

Feeds the flames

A stoker is a person who tends a furnace, feeding fuel to keep it burning—historically on steamships and locomotives, later in industrial settings.

The work was grueling, performed in intense heat below decks or in boiler rooms.

By extension, stoker can describe anyone who feeds or stokes a fire.

The term has largely faded with steam power. (Capitalized Stoker typically refers to the author Bram Stoker.)
