packet boat
Scheduled cargo carrier
A packet boat is a boat that travels a regular route carrying mail, passengers, and cargo.
The name comes from the packets of mail such vessels transported.
Packet boats operated on rivers, canals, and coastal waters before railroads displaced them.
The packet boat arrived every Tuesday with letters from the capital.
