cotton trade
Textile crop business
The cotton trade is the commercial exchange of raw cotton and cotton products.
Historically, the term evokes the transatlantic economy built on slave labor in the American South, where cotton was picked by enslaved people and shipped to British mills.
Today it refers more neutrally to global cotton markets: The cotton trade has shifted toward Asian producers.
