sternwheeler

Rear-paddled riverboat

A sternwheeler is a steamboat propelled by a large paddle wheel mounted at the stern rather than on the sides.

These vessels were common on American rivers in the 19th century, particularly the Mississippi, where their shallow draft allowed navigation in waters too shallow for other boats: The sternwheeler rounded the bend, its wheel churning the muddy water.
