stern-wheeler

Rear-propelled riverboat

A stern-wheeler is a steamboat propelled by a single large paddle wheel mounted at the rear (stern) of the vessel.

These flat-bottomed boats dominated river navigation in 19th-century America, particularly on the Mississippi and its tributaries, where shallow waters made them more practical than side-wheelers: The stern-wheeler churned upriver toward Memphis.
