Coatings are layers of material applied to surfaces for protection, decoration, or function.
Paint, varnish, and lacquer are coatings.
Industrial coatings protect metal from corrosion; nonstick coatings keep food from adhering to pans.
The word also describes any thin covering: a light coating of dust, a coating of ice on the windshield.
