contents

What's in there

Contents refers to what is inside something—the contents of a box, a stomach, a document.

For written works, contents specifically means the list of chapters or sections at the front of a book: Check the table of contents.

The word always appears plural in these senses, though the singular content refers to substance or meaning: the content of his speech.
