scribes
Ancient text copiers
A scribe is someone who copies or writes out documents by hand, a role of considerable importance before printing and digital technology made the job largely obsolete.
In ancient and medieval times, scribes were essential for preserving religious texts, legal records, and literary works.
The verb scribe means to write or inscribe, though it sounds old-fashioned in most contexts.
In woodworking and metalworking, to scribe is to mark a line or pattern on a surface, and the tool used for this is also called a scribe.
