Euphrates

Iraq's ancient river

The Euphrates is a major river in southwestern Asia, flowing from eastern Turkey through Syria and Iraq to join the Tigris near the Persian Gulf.

Together with the Tigris, it defined ancient Mesopotamia—the "land between the rivers"—where early civilizations arose.

The fertile crescent between the Tigris and Euphrates gave birth to writing and agriculture.
