cervical vertebrae

Spine's top section

Cervical vertebrae are the seven small bones forming the upper spine, extending from the base of the skull through the neck.

They support the head and allow its wide range of motion—nodding, turning, tilting.

The topmost two have special names: the atlas (C1) supports the skull, and the axis (C2) enables rotation.

The accident damaged her cervical vertebrae.
