symphysis

Fibrous bone union

A symphysis is a joint where bones are connected by fibrous cartilage, allowing limited movement.

The pubic symphysis joins the two halves of the pelvis at the front; the intervertebral discs between spinal vertebrae are also symphyses.

Unlike freely movable joints, symphyses provide stability with slight flexibility.

Plural: symphyses.
