nonsense mutation
Codon becomes terminator
A nonsense mutation is a genetic change that converts a normal codon into a stop signal, prematurely halting protein synthesis.
The resulting protein is truncated and usually nonfunctional.
The term contrasts with missense mutations, which substitute one amino acid for another, and silent mutations, which have no effect on the protein.
