octants
Sextant's simpler cousins
Octants are the eight divisions of three-dimensional space created by three mutually perpendicular planes—like slicing a cube through all three axes.
The term extends from quadrant, which divides a plane into four parts.
In navigation and astronomy, an octant was also an instrument for measuring angles, similar to a sextant but spanning one-eighth of a circle: The navigator took readings with his octant.
