In basketball, a player with good hangtime seems to float while shooting or dunking: Jordan's hangtime was legendary.
In football, a punter wants maximum hangtime to let coverage reach the returner.
The term extends to any suspended moment: The joke had perfect hangtime before the punchline landed.
