passing play
Quarterback throws downfield
A passing play is a football play in which the quarterback throws the ball to a receiver, as opposed to a running play where the ball is handed off.
The term applies to both planned pass plays and improvised throws: The coach called a passing play on third and long.
Passing plays generally risk incompletions or interceptions but can gain more yards quickly.
