echocardiography

Cardiac imaging sonography

Echocardiography is the use of ultrasound to create images of the heart.

The technique allows doctors to examine heart structure and function—valve movement, chamber size, blood flow—without surgery or radiation.

An echocardiogram is the resulting image or the procedure itself: The echocardiogram showed a leaky mitral valve.
