embolus

Circulating vascular obstruction

An embolus is a mass that travels through the bloodstream and lodges in a blood vessel, blocking circulation.

Most commonly it's a blood clot that has broken loose from its original site, but an embolus can also be an air bubble, fat globule, or piece of tissue.

When an embolus obstructs a vessel, the resulting condition is called an embolism.

The surgeon worried that an embolus might travel to the patient's lungs.
