pulmonary veins

Heart-bound lung vessels

Pulmonary veins are the blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the heart's left atrium.

Unlike most veins, which carry oxygen-depleted blood, pulmonary veins transport freshly oxygenated blood—the opposite of what pulmonary arteries do.

Humans typically have four pulmonary veins, two from each lung.

The surgeon repaired the damaged pulmonary vein during the procedure.
