psychophysics

Perception-stimulus research field

Psychophysics is the branch of psychology that studies the relationship between physical stimuli and the sensations they produce.

It measures how much a stimulus must change before we notice a difference, or how intense a light or sound must be before we perceive it at all: Psychophysics experiments determined the threshold for detecting a tone.

The field bridges physics and subjective experience.
