synesthesia

Cross-wired perception

Synesthesia is a neurological phenomenon in which stimulation of one sense triggers automatic experience in another—hearing a sound might produce a color, or seeing a letter might evoke a taste.

People with synesthesia might perceive the number 5 as red or experience Tuesday as having a particular texture.

The term extends loosely to any blending of sensory modes: The music had a synesthetic quality, all purples and golds.
