presidios

Colonial military outposts

Presidios are fortified military settlements, particularly those established by Spanish colonizers in the Americas from the 16th through 19th centuries.

They served as frontier outposts protecting missions and colonial territories: The presidio at San Francisco guarded the entrance to the bay.

Several modern cities grew from these original fortifications.
