ranchos
Southwestern cattle estates
Ranchos is the plural of rancho, a Spanish word for a small ranch or rural settlement, particularly in the southwestern United States and Latin America.
Historically, ranchos were land grants during Spanish and Mexican colonial rule: The old ranchos of California became valuable real estate.
The term persists in place names throughout the region.
