presidio

Colonial military outpost

A presidio is a Spanish colonial military fort or garrison, particularly those established in the American Southwest and California during the 18th century.

The term now typically refers to the historic sites of such fortifications: The old presidio has been converted into a museum.

Several former presidios have become parks or landmarks. (Capitalized Presidio often refers to the Presidio of San Francisco.)
