sand dollars
Flat sea urchins
Sand dollars are flat, disk-shaped sea urchins found in sandy ocean floors.
Living sand dollars are covered with short spines and appear purplish-brown; the bleached white skeletons that wash ashore are what most people recognize.
The distinctive five-petaled pattern on top resembles a flower.
We found sand dollars on the beach.
