bulkheads

Vessel's internal walls

Bulkheads are upright partitions dividing a ship, aircraft, or other vessel into compartments.

In ships, they provide structural support and prevent flooding from spreading if the hull is breached: The watertight bulkheads kept the damaged vessel afloat.

The term extends to retaining walls along shorelines that hold back water or earth, and to any dividing wall or barrier in a structure.
