draft animal

Harness-wearing beast

A draft animal is one bred or trained to pull heavy loads—plows, carts, wagons, or other equipment.

Horses, oxen, mules, and water buffalo are common examples.

The term comes from draft meaning to pull or draw: Farmers relied on draft animals before tractors.

Also spelled draught animal in British English.
