Furry household members
Pets are animals kept for companionship rather than utility—dogs, cats, fish, birds, hamsters.
The relationship implies affection and care: She treats her pets like family.
Pet also means a favorite: a pet project, teacher's pet.
As a verb, to pet is to stroke affectionately, and by extension, to engage in sexual touching short of intercourse: They were petting in the back seat.
As an adjective, pet describes something cherished or frequently indulged: my pet peeve.
