bugbear

Nagging source of dread

A bugbear is a source of persistent annoyance, fear, or difficulty: Grammar has always been my bugbear.

The word originally referred to a goblin or imaginary creature used to frighten children, and retains that sense of something dreaded, though often disproportionately so.

In fantasy games, a bugbear is a large goblin-like monster.
