periscopes
Underwater vessel viewers
Periscopes are optical instruments that allow viewing from a concealed or submerged position.
A system of mirrors or prisms lets an observer see over or around obstacles—most famously from submarines looking above the water's surface.
The term extends to any device using similar principles: tank periscopes, trench periscopes.
As a verb, to periscope is to extend or peer upward like a periscope: Prairie dogs periscoped from their burrows.
