conning towers

Raised observation platforms

Conning towers are raised platforms or enclosed structures on a vessel from which navigation and steering are controlled.

On submarines, the conning tower is the distinctive vertical structure rising from the hull, housing periscopes and providing access to the bridge when surfaced.

On warships, it was often an armored station for command during battle.

The captain climbed to the conning tower to survey the harbor.
