Raking is the act of using a rake—gathering leaves, smoothing soil, or clearing debris with the toothed implement.
Extended uses follow the motion: raking fingers through hair, searchlights raking the sky.
To rake is also to sweep gunfire across an area: Machine guns raked the trenches.
