barrel vault

Semicircular stone roof

A barrel vault is an architectural ceiling formed by a continuous arch, creating a tunnel-like structure.

It's one of the simplest and oldest vault forms, used since ancient times in buildings from Roman cisterns to Romanesque churches: The wine cellar's barrel vault kept temperatures cool year-round.
