drop cloth
Floor protection fabric
A drop cloth is a large sheet of canvas, plastic, or paper spread over floors and furniture to protect them during painting or renovation work.
The name comes from the cloth being dropped into place rather than carefully fitted.
We covered the hardwood with drop cloths before starting on the ceiling.
