overpainting

Painting over paint

Overpainting is the technique of applying new paint over an existing painted surface.

In art restoration, it refers to later additions covering original work—sometimes to repair damage, sometimes to censor or alter content.

Artists also overpaint their own canvases, reworking compositions or reusing materials: X-rays revealed an earlier portrait beneath the overpainting.
