periosteum
Bone's outer wrapper
The periosteum is the dense membrane of connective tissue that covers the outer surface of bones, except at joints where cartilage takes over.
It contains blood vessels and nerves that nourish bone tissue and plays a crucial role in bone growth and repair.
When you bang your shin, the periosteum is largely responsible for the sharp pain.
