synovitis

Swollen joint lining

Synovitis is inflammation of the synovial membrane—the tissue lining joints that produces lubricating fluid.

It causes pain, swelling, and stiffness, commonly affecting knees, hips, and wrists.

Synovitis can result from injury, overuse, arthritis, or infection: The runner developed synovitis in her knee after increasing her mileage too quickly.
