optical disk
Shiny data circle
An optical disk is a flat, circular storage medium that encodes data as tiny pits or marks read by a laser beam.
CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs are optical disks.
The technology emerged in the 1980s and dominated music, video, and software distribution before streaming and flash storage overtook it.
Also spelled optical disc.
