HD-DVD

Failed disc format

HD-DVD was a high-definition optical disc format developed by Toshiba to succeed DVD, competing with Sony's Blu-ray from 2006 to 2008.

The format war ended when major studios abandoned HD-DVD, making Blu-ray the standard.

HD-DVD players and discs became obsolete almost immediately: I still have an HD-DVD player collecting dust somewhere.
