one drop
Smallest liquid unit
One drop refers to the historical American principle that any known African ancestry—even "one drop of blood"—classified a person as Black.
This rule, formalized in Jim Crow–era laws, enforced racial segregation and denied mixed-race individuals white legal status.
The term now appears in discussions of racial classification's arbitrary and pseudoscientific foundations: The one-drop rule had no basis in biology but shaped American identity for generations.
