blood quantum

Heritage percentage measurement

Blood quantum is a system for measuring a person's Indigenous ancestry as a fraction, such as one-half or one-quarter Native American.

The U.S. government imposed this standard in the early twentieth century to determine tribal membership and eligibility for federal benefits, and many tribes still use it today.

Critics argue that blood quantum is a colonial construct that undermines tribal sovereignty and forces Indigenous identity into rigid biological categories that don't reflect traditional ways of defining belonging.

Her blood quantum qualified her for enrollment, but her cousin's did not.
